Preliminary results by DNage have shown that certain nutritional ingredients with a long history of safe use in humans have a dramatic effect in increasing the lifespan of DNA-repair mutant mice. DNage aims at identifying combinations of existing (safe) products that -in certain ratio’s and concentrations- have a positive effect on the delay of onset of ageing related medical problems. Such combinations of existing products are patentable.

As part of this initiative DNage has initiated a two-year Food & Nutrition Delta (FND) innovation project “Food for Thought” in close collaboration with Erasmus University and the University of Utrecht.

The goal of this specific project to identify food ingredients that will delay the onset of ageing related neurodegenerative diseases. A € 500.000 subsidy to support this project was granted by Food Nutrition Delta (FND), which is an Innovation Program of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, executed by its agency SenterNovem. The subsidy will cover a significant portion of the costs of the early phases of the project.

In this project we will study in the highly innovative “premature-ageing” models of DNage the effect of several food ingredients on aging. And their possible influence on delaying the onset of the development of several specific ageing related diseases, in particular those related to the neurological system. Further collaborations in this field are under discussions. Both aiming to identify new food ingredients with a positive effect on ageing, as well as to assessing the actual effectiveness of a range of existing food ingredients that are considered playing a role in ageing.
